BANDHAVGARH

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, a jewel in the crown of India's wildlife reserves, is a testament to the beauty and wonders of nature. Situated in the Vindhya Hills of the Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh, this reserve covers an area of more than 1500 square kilometers.

Its topographical features include steep ridges, undulating forest-covered hills and vast grasslands, creating a diverse habitat that supports a wide range of flora and fauna.

Bandhavgarh, renowned for having one of the highest densities of Bengal tigers in the world offers a mesmerizing experience for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers.

Apart from tigers, Bandhavgarh is home to a diverse range of species, including leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, various species of deer, wild boars, Indian Gaur and more than 250 bird species, making it a biodiversity hotspot.

The history of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve is steeped in legend and antiquity. The name 'Bandhavgarh' is derived from an ancient fort in the region, with 'Bandhav' meaning brother and 'Garh' meaning fort, linked to a legend involving Lord Rama.

It is said that Lord Rama gifted this fort to his brother Lakshmana on their way back to Ayodhya from Lanka.

The fort, perched atop the Bandhavgarh hill, stands as a silent witness to the evolving narrative of this land, from the reign of various dynasties to its transformation into a conservation site.

Another marvel in Bandhavgarh is “Shesh Shaiya”, a 65 foot long statue of Lord Vishnu resting on a 7 hooded Snake - The Sheshnaag.

The place is situated in the middle of the national Park on a hill, where water accumulates at the feet of Lord Vishnu. It is the origin of a river “Charan Ganga” which inflows from the foot of “Lord Vishnu” and hence the name of the river.

The statue is believed to be an asset of the 10th century. With the statue of Lord Vishnu, there is Shiva linga on the left and Brahma on the right. However, the Brahma statue is not fully visible as there are tree roots all over it.

Planning a visit to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve not only promises an encounter with the majestic Bengal tiger but also offers a deep dive into India's rich natural heritage and historical legacy.

Whether it's traversing the dense forests on a safari, marveling at the ancient Shesh Shaiya, or simply soaking in the tranquil beauty of the landscape, Bandhavgarh is a destination that captivates everyone’s heart.
